This evening marked the opening of the 2009 Audi Hamilton Island Race Week. And it all started with a bang of fireworks as the brand new Hamilton Island Yacht Club was officially opened by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh. Around 500 guests including the skippers and navigators of the 194 boats competing were there to celebrate the opening. Sailors, spectators and island locals were then entertained by Daddy Cool & Mondo Rock front man Ross Wilson & the international cover band Plastique.

2008 Audi Hamilton Island Race Week Starts Off With A Bang!

Hundreds of sailors, guests, staff & revelers gathered at the Marina Tavern this evening to celebrate the start of the 2008 Audi Hamilton Island race Week. After the official Flag raising ceremony, the crowd was treated to an awesome fireworks display and then entertained by the Wolverines and Johnny Diesel.
Tomorrow signals the start of the on water regatta events with the UBS Lindeman Island Race starting from 10.30am. With a record number of 225 boats at this years event the competition will be fierce. There was a definite a buzz in the air today as crews arrived and prepared their boats for racing, while forecasters are predicting some favorable sailing conditions.
